How to Make a Simple No Button and Zipper Skirt

You do not need a pattern to make a simple skirt. Choose the fabric and make the skirt in any length and fullness you choose. Make a short straight skirt in a heavy wool twill for a tailored look or a long full skirt in a lightweight cotton floral print for a casual feminine look. An elastic waist allows you to slip on this skirt without using any buttons or zippers.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Fabric
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Iron
  • 1-inch elastic
  • Safety pin or bodkin
  • Needle or machine hem foot

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your hips and waist. Add 1 inch to the waist measurement for seam allowances. Add 3 inches to the hip measurement for seam allowances and ease of wear.

    • 2

Cut a rectangle of fabric 6 inches longer than you want the skirt to be. For a straight skirt, cut the fabric as wide as the hip measurement you calculated earlier. For a full skirt, cut it twice as wide as that measurement.

    • 3

Lay the skirt right side up on a table with the edges that correspond to the length of the skirt on the sides. Fold the skirt in half by bringing the side edges together.

    • 4

Sew the skirt together by sewing 1/2 inch from the edge along the side opposite the fold.

    • 5

Iron down 1 1/2 inch on the top of the skirt for a casing. Finish the raw edge of the casing with a zigzag stitch. Sew a straight seam 1 1/4 inch from the fold to make the casing. Leave a 3-inch opening for inserting the elastic.

    • 6

Cut a length of 1-inch elastic equal to the waist measurement you calculated earlier. Use a safety pin to thread the elastic into the casing. Sew the ends of the elastic together. Be sure the elastic in the casing is not twisted. Sew the opening in the casing closed.

    • 7

Iron up 1 1/2 inch on the bottom of the skirt then iron up another 3 inches for a hem. Hand sew the hem or use the hemming stitch and hemming foot on the sewing machine.
