How to Knit for Dogs

Our dogs are not just our pets: they are more like family. Knitting a sweater for your dog is a personal and gratifying experience. Dogs vary in shape and size as much as human beings do, so the size and shape of this sweater will range based on the type of animal you plan to make a sweater for. Once you have these dimensions, creating a sweater is simple.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the dimensions of your dog. Measure first from the neck to the base, from the chest to the bottom of the foot and measure the widest part of your dog's body. The stitching will vary based on the size of your pet. These instructions are for smaller size dogs, such as chihuahuas and poodles.

    • 2

Cast onto your needle 20 to 30 stitches of your chosen yarn. Start with two rows and increase one stitch with every second row until you have either 36 or 46 stitches, depending on the size of your dog.

    • 3

After stitching five to 10 stitches, add the second ball of yarn and bind off 15 to 20 stitches. To knit the neck of your dog's sweater, add to the end of the previous row. Depending on the particular size of your pet you may want to add 1 or 2 inches to the edge and bind it off.

Take a tapestry needle and sew the neck edges together.
