How to Knit Stockings

Stockings or socks are some of the easiest and most popular garments to knit. Not only will you enjoy knitting stockings, if you practice knitting consistently, you may find yourself with good items to give to family members as presents or sell at flea markets. Knitting socks requires basic knitting skills and access to some (fairly cheap) materials. If you are interested in learning to knit, you can do so using stockings as fairly simple practice projects.

Instructions

    • 1

Cast the stitches onto the needle.Thread a piece of yarn around one needle 48 times. Then, thread this piece of yarn evenly around two other needles (you're using three), so you end up with three needles with 16 threads around them. Tie these three needles together by threading a second piece of yarn through them.

    • 2

Start building the heel. Move some of the stitches from two of your needles onto the third needle, so that one needle has more stitches than the other two. Make sure these three needles stick together as a horizontally symmetrical triangle by moving the same number of stitches off of both needles.

    • 3

Do a series of slips and knits on the longer needle until it has has a few rows of material hanging from it. Purl two stitches past the center, then purl two stitches together, then purl one more stitch.

    • 4

Knit rows from the other two needles that are equal in length to the row from the longer needle. You now have your heel.

    • 5

Close the two sides that have no workable material on them. To do this, simply stick the two smaller needles through these closed sides of fabric, and purl them until they close.

    • 6

Knit all the remaining stitches until they are closed up. If you have any hanging material left that cannot be knit into the sock, simply cut this excess material off with scissors.
