How to Make Cloth Burp Rags

Burp rags or cloths not only protect your clothes from the baby; they protect your baby from your clothes. Baby clothes and bedding are made from soft fabric, without any scratchy trim. They are washed in only gentle baby detergent. Adults wear all kinds of fabric and trim and wash or dry clean their clothes in many ways. Make soft cotton burp clothes that are thick, absorbent and machine washable to protect both your clothes and your baby's delicate skin. Add trim to along the outside edge to make them more attractive.

Things You'll Need

Cotton knit or flannel fabric
Yardstick
Scissors
Sewing machine
Thread
Washable trim

Instructions

  Cut four 8-by-12-inch rectangles of soft knit or flannel fabric.

  Stack the fabric with all edges even and the right sides of the fabric facing out on the top and bottom layers.

  Set the sewing machine to sew a wide zigzag stitch. Stitch around all four sides of the stack of cloth. Stitch close to the edge, so that the needle goes just beyond the edge of the fabric on the right side of the stitch.

  Sew a band of trim along one of the short edges of the stack of cloth. Turn under 1/2 inch on each end of the trim to make a finished edge.
