How to Make a Ruffle Skirt on Bloomers

A pair of ruffled bloomers looks sweet peeking out from under a skirt, and a petticoat gives any full skirt a better line. If your daughter is uncomfortable with multiple layers of elastic around her tummy, add the petticoat to the bloomers for a one-piece undergarment. For tiny girls, sew an actual skirt to the bloomers. This is a wonderful garment for the recently potty trained; everything pulls down together, so she won't have to worry about holding her skirt out of the way while she "goes."

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the depth of the casing at the waist of the bloomers. Remove the casing seam with a seam ripper and take off the elastic. Measure the distance around the top of the bloomers with the elastic removed. Add 1 inch to this measurement for seam allowances.

    • 2

Cut a piece of ruffled trim this length.

    • 3

Calculate the width of the fabric for the skirt by adding the depth of the casing to the desired length of the skirt and subtracting the width of the ruffled trim.

    • 4

Cut a piece of fabric for the skirt, using the length and width you calculated. Sew the trim to the bottom of the piece.

    • 5

Lay the rectangle on a table right side up with the ruffle closest to you. Fold the skirt in half by bringing the side edges together. Sew the sides together by stitching 1/2 inch from the edge.

    • 6

Turn the skirt right side out and place it over the waist of the bloomers, aligning the top edge of the skirt with the top edge of the bloomers. Sew the edges together with a zigzag stitch.

    • 7

Fold the top of the skirt and bloomer combination down; folding both layers along the original fold line on the bloomers. Sew the casing down, leaving a 2-inch opening for turning. You may sew throughout the outside layer of the skirt or fold it up out of the way before you sew.

Thread the elastic back through the casing with a safety pin. Be careful not to twist the elastic. Sew the ends of the elastic together and sew the opening in the casing closed.
