How to Make a Walking Rope

Walking ropes are one tool that no preschool teacher should be without. This creative invention teaches young children how to walk in a straight line by supplying loop pieces for holding onto. The front end has a loop for the teacher to hold as she leads her class in a line.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 yard denim fabric
  • Measuring tape
  • Disappearing ink pen
  • Scissors
  • Iron

Instructions

    • 1

Measure a strip from the denim fabric that is 1 yard long and 4 inches wide. Mark the measurements onto the fabric with a disappearing ink pen and then cut out the fabric strip.

    • 2

Place the fabric right side down on an iron-safe surface and fold the edges inward by 1/8 inch. Press the fold with the iron.

    • 3

Fold the strip in half, lengthwise, so you have a 1 yard long, 1 3/4-inch thick strip. Press the fold into the strip and place a pin every 6 inches to better hold it in place.

    • 4

Sew the strip's edges closed all the way around with a straight stitch.

    • 5

Fold one end of the rope down 4 inches and pin it in place.

    • 6

Stitch the loop into place with a 1-inch straight stitch box, placing an "X" in the box for extra reinforcement.

    • 7

Cut out three 12-inch long strips that are 3 inches wide. Fold, press and stitch the edges the same as you did for the rope.

    • 8

Position the strips along the rope in a figure-8 pattern so that you have one loop on each side of the rope. Pin the strips in place.

    • 9

Secure each loop with a box stitch placed where the rope and loops meet.
