How to Make a Shirt From a Sheet

T-shirts are comfortable classics that can be worn anytime and made out of just about any fabric, including a bed sheet. If you have an old, clean sheet that you're getting ready to retire, salvage some of it by using it to make a T-shirt. This can be a great way to save a child's favorite bed sheets or a fun experience for you making your own homemade clothes out of something you already own. All you need to get started are a few basic sewing materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a T-shirt pattern that you like from your local fabric store. Make sure you purchase a pattern that fits your bust or chest, sleeve, armhole and waist measurements. Make adjustments to the length, armhole size, sleeve length or neckline of the pattern, if desired.

    • 2

Lay a clean sheet flat on a flat surface. Iron the sheet to press it flat and straight. Pin the pattern pieces to the top of the sheet with sewing pins. Cut them out of the sheet with fabric scissors, allowing for 1 inch of extra fabric on all the sides of the pattern pieces.

    • 3

Pin the front and back of the T-shirt together with sewing pins. Sew the pieces together with a 12/80 universal sewing needle, polyester thread and a straight or zig-zag stitch on a sewing machine; allow for a 1/4-inch inseam along the edges.

Pin the sleeves to the shoulders and the neckline with sewing pins. Sew the sleeves on and finish the neckline to complete your T-shirt.
