How to Get Lint Off a Quilt Without Washing It

Quilting involves cutting and sewing pieces of fabric together with batting in between. The nature of the project produces a lot of lint. If you want to get rid of the lint without washing the quilt -- perhaps because not all the pieces are colorfast -- there are several ways to do so. Select more than one lint-removing technique to ensure your quilt is smooth and lint free.

Things You'll Need

  • Dryer
  • Lint brush roller
  • Masking tape
  • Disposable razor
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Lint brush attachment for vacuum

Instructions

    • 1

Shake the quilt outdoors. This removes a lot of the loose lint.

    • 2

Clean your dryer's lint trap and place the quilt in the machine for 10 minutes on low heat or air dry. Check the lint trap after that time and clean it if necessary. "Dry" the quilt again for another 10 minutes.

    • 3

Lay the quilt out flat and run a lint roller over the entire surface. Refresh the roller as it fills with lint. Wrap masking tape around your hand with the sticky side facing outward to get the same effect, then dab the lint off the quilt.

Run a disposable razor over the surface if your quilt is free of tassels and hanging pieces. Carefully shave the lint into piles and dispose of it.

    • 5

Vacuum the lint using the lint brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner. Hold down the quilt so it doesn't get sucked up into the vacuum, which can damage it. A second person may be needed for this step.
