How to Sew a Layered Skirt

Store bought layered skirts are often expensive. The cost of the materials used to make these skirts pales in comparison. Save approximately half the expense of the skirt by making it at home. Cut the fabric into squares before you construct your skirt. The points of the square should come down from the center of the material at the desired length you want the skirt to come down to. These measurements are designated for adults; make smaller squares if the skirt is for a child or infant.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay one square out in front of you and fold it in half twice to find the center point of the fabric. Mark the center point in chalk. Lay the fabric down and spread it back out. Repeat on the remaining square.

    • 2

Measure the diameter of your waistline. Make a circle that is the same diameter as your waistline on the poster board. Measure in 5/8 of an inch for seam allowance and make another circle. Cut the smaller circle out.

    • 3

Align the center point of the poster board circle with the center point on one of the squares and lay the circle on the fabric.

    • 4

Pin the poster board circle in place and trace around the poster board circle. Remove the pins and repeat on the remaining square of fabric. Remove the pins and set the poster board circle aside.

    • 5

Follow the traced lines to cut the circle out of both squares. Lay one square out in front of you with the right side of the fabric up. Lay the wrong side of the second square on top of the right side of the first square with the circles lined up.

    • 6

Turn the top square around so it is positioned in the shape of a diamond on top of the first square; keep the circles lined up as you do this.

    • 7

Pin around the edge of the circles to join the two squares of fabric. Measure and cut a piece of fabric that is 5 inches wide and the same length as your waistline from the 1/3 of a yard piece of fabric.

    • 8

Fold this fabric strip in half vertically and then fold the open bottom edge over 1/2 inch and iron. Fold it over another 1/2 inch and iron the fold line.

    • 9

Pin the right side of the folded seam to the right side of the 5/8-inch seam allowance of the circles. Sew the circles to the waistband.
