How to Make a Children's Sarong

Make your child a stylish sarong for her next luau or Hawaiian-themed event or vacation. Sarongs have been worn for thousands of years as one of the most simple and straightforward articles of clothing available. It can be worn as a skirt, shirt, dress or any other number of items. Sarongs require no buttons, zippers or the use of a sewing machine to make.

Instructions

    • 1

Assemble or purchase fabric in an island or bright-colored print. Adult sarongs are 72 inches long by 40 inches on average. Reduce the measurement by half to fit a child: 36-by-20. Feel free to increase the yardage if you have a very tall child. The longer sides of the fabric will be the selvage edges, and no hemming is needed, but look for fabric without a large white strip at the edges, as this strip will show in the finished product.

Create the fringe. On the two short ends of the fabric, pull out the lengthwise threads until you have about an inch of fringe. Leave the fringe as-is or make knots every ½-inch for a casual island aesthetic.

    • 3

Try on the sarong and practice tying it. Have your child try on the sarong to make sure the length is appropriate and that there is enough fabric to comfortably tie the sarong. Tying sarongs can be tricky, so you may have to help her tie it the first few times. See Resources for instructions on how to tie a sarong.
