How to Make a Trench Coat Tie

A trench coat is an attractive outerwear garment; it is held closed at the waist by a fabric tie. If you have lost your fabric tie, or if you simply want to give your trench coat a new look, make your own fabric tie. A simple trench coat tie is a simple item to sew and can be completed in one session.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a rectangle of fabric that is 2 yards long and 5 inches wide.

    • 2

Fold the short ends down twice towards the non-patterned side, creating a fold that is 1/4 inch deep both times to create finished edge and sew them flat.

    • 3

Lay the rectangle pattern-side down on an ironing board.

    • 4

Fold one raw edge towards the non-patterned side once, creating a fold that is 1/4 inch deep; iron it flat.

    • 5

Fold the other raw edge towards the non-patterened side once, creating a fold that is 1/4 inch deep; iron it flat as well.

    • 6

Fold the rectangle in half along the length and iron it flat.

    • 7

Sew around the loose edges of the rectangle with needle and thread, finishing the edges. This leaves you with a sturdy fabric tie that you can thread through the loops of the trench coat and tie in the front.
