How to Make a Turban for a Woman

Turbans worn by women are often (but certainly not always) brightly colored swaths of fabric twisted around the top of the head to hide the hair. Wearing a turban is a statement, with its roots in both culture and religion. Lately, many women wear turbans to hide the side effects of chemotherapy. Regardless of your reason for wearing a turban, making and folding it correctly might take a little practice, but it is a good beginning sewing project for beginning cloth crafters.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 yards of fabric
  • Threaded sewing machine
  • Iron
  • Pins
  • Measuring Tape

Instructions

    • 1

Spread the fabric out onto a flat surface. Turbans can be made from any sort of fabric, whether it is thick corduroy or a frothy chiffon. Be sure that the weight of the fabric is appropriate for the climate.

    • 2

Measure and cut the yard of fabric in half. Line up the short edges of both pieces of fabric and pin together so that the edges are even. On the "wrong" side of the fabric, sew a strong hem along both pieces of fabric so that they are stitched together. Remove the pins and iron open the seam.

    • 3

Fold over all four edges, measuring frequently to be certain that your fold is even. This will hide the uneven, raggedy edges of the fabric so that you have a long piece of neat fabric, somewhat like a scarf. Hem each side with close stitches, using either a basic stitch or a decorative zigzag stitch with an alternate color of fabric, if desired. Be certain that all four edges are hemmed neatly.

    • 4

Fold the turban onto your head starting with the center seam in the center of your forehead. Cross the two ends over the back of your head, pulling the fabric so that it stretches from the center of your forehead, over the top of your head. Wrap the ends around your head, twisting them at the front and at the back until you have enough to knot at the back of your head. Fold the ends under the fabric so that the turban does not unravel.
