How to Fix a Run in a Knit Sweater on a Machine

Sewing enthusiasts with moderate experience should attempt to repair a knit sweater before throwing it out. Although a run may seem devastating to someone without knitting skills, small holes may be repaired on a sewing machine. Even larger runs in inconspicuous locations can be concealed with a patch and seam stitching. There is no harm in trying to repair a knit sweater with your sewing machine, and you might pleasantly surprise yourself by fixing the run and extending the sweater's life.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase yarn and embroidery thread to match the existing sweater yarn surrounding the run.

    • 2

Tie off the stray yarn tails surrounding the run to prevent further unraveling. Cut away any excess yarn.

    • 3

Turn the sweater inside out. Cut a piece of fabric that is similar in color to the sweater to cover the hole. Pin the fabric patch to the inside of the sweater.

    • 4

Thread the bobbin and sewing machine with the matching embroidery thread you purchased in the first step.

    • 5

Sew the patch into the run, closing the sides of the sweater tightly to keep the patch and stitches hidden, and to prevent further unraveling. Secure with a few back stitches.
