Things You'll Need
Instructions
Fold your 1 yard of fabric in half horizontally. Make sure the front edges of the fabric are touching each other. You will be looking at the back of the fabric once it's folded.
Lay your shirt on top of the folded fabric. If it has sleeves, stretch out the sleeves. Straighten out as many wrinkles as you can. You must be able to cleanly trace around your top.
Trace around your shirt using the tailor's chalk. This will transfer the image of your shirt to the fabric. Remove the shirt from the fabric when you have finished tracing.
Create a 1/4-inch seam allowance line around your tracing. This line should be drawn outside the tracing 1/4 inch all the way around your shirt. If your shirt has spaghetti straps, avoid making this line at the straps. You can add straps by sewing wide ribbon to your shirt.
Pin the folded fabric together. As you cut along the seam allowance lines you drew, you don't want the fabric layer underneath to slip around. Cut on the seam allowance lines to reveal two pieces of fabric shaped identically to the shirt you used to create the pattern.
Sew along the seam allowance lines with a sewing machine. Remove any pins in the fabric. Be careful to not sew your sleeves or neck hole together. Fold the edges over and sew a hem to keep those parts from fraying.
Turn your shirt right-side out. Add ruffles, fringe, appliqués or whatever else you want to your cute and customized shirt.
