How to Make a Fabric Hairband

Knit fabric has some stretch so it makes a hairband that is soft and easy to wear. It only takes a small amount of fabric to make a hairband, so you can use the leftover fabric from a garment you have made to make a matching band. Make a wide band with stripes running across it for an eye-catching hair accessory. Make a narrow band in a floral print for a sweet accessory for a young girl.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure around your head at the point where you will wear the hairband. Add 1 inch to this length.

    • 2

Stretch the fabric slightly and cut a strip of knit fabric the length you calculated. Cut it slightly more than twice as wide as you wish the hairband to be. The fabric should stretch along the length of the strip.

    • 3

Fold the strip in half by bringing the short ends of the strip together with the right sides touching. Sew the ends together with a straight stitch, 1/2 inch from the end. You will be making a ring of fabric.

    • 4

Fold the ring in half by bringing the raw edges of the long sides together with the right side of the fabric out.

    • 5

Set your machine to sew a stretch stitch. Sew the long sides of the fabric together by sewing along the edges with a stretch stitch.

    • 6

Refold the fabric so the seam runs along the center of the inside.
