How to Make Black Wedding Cage Veil Hats

Black bridesmaid dresses create an elegant atmosphere at the altar, by contrasting with the bride's white gown. Create accessories as simple and elegant as the dresses by making black cage hats. These hats are just a bit of net veiling worn across the face, where they draw attention to the wearer's eyes. These hats are also birdcage hats because they have the same rounded shape as the top of a birdcage. Small hats like these are also called "fascinators."

Things You'll Need

Ruler
Black netting
Scissors
Needle
Thread
Small clear hair comb

Instructions

  Cut a rectangle of black net 30 inches long and 9 inches wide. Net with large holes will look best.

  Gather one of the long edges 1/2 inch from the edge by making long stitches through the net.

  Pull the thread to tightly gather the edge of the net into a bunch. Tie the ends of the thread together to hold the gathers in place.

  Turn the hat inside out so that the gathered edge is on the inside of the hat. Pull the short edges together and overlap them slightly. Do not sew the ends together. The seam will be more noticeable than a small gap in the net.

  Sew a small, clear hair comb to the gathered edge on the inside of the hat. Sew the comb on loosely so that it will rotate back and forth. When the comb is pointing to the back of the hat the concave side should be down.

  Wear the hat by sticking the comb in the hair on the top of your head. Place the opening in the fabric in the back. The bottom edge of the hat should hit just below your nose. You may trim the hat if it is too long.
