How to Make a Velvet Sash

A velvet sash on a satin dress creates an elegant winter outfit. Tie a red velvet sash around a young girl's white organdy dress for a classic holiday look. Add a sprig of silk holly to the sash and tuck a matching sprig in her red velvet hair bow. A teal velvet sash will add an eye-catching bit of color to an ecru lace dress, while a back velvet sash is the perfect finishing touch for a gold lamé evening gown.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two strips of velvet 1 inch wider and 1 inch longer than you want the sash to be. It is attractive to cut the ends of the strips at a 45-degree angle. Make the smaller angle on the top of one end and on the bottom of the other end.

    • 2

Stack the pieces of the sash with the right sides together and join them by sewing all the way around, 1/2 inch from the edge. Leave a 4-inch opening for turning. The best place for the opening is 1/3 of the way along one long edge.

    • 3

Cut off the seam allowances at the corners. The seam allowance is the fabric that extends outside the seam. Cut close to the seam without cutting the seam.

    • 4

Turn the sash right-side out and sew up the opening by hand.
