Things You'll Need
Instructions
Measure and cut the fabric. You will need two pieces of cotton fabric that each measure 12.5 by 15 inches and one piece of cotton fabric measuring 12.5 by 7.5 inches. You will also need a piece of heavyweight iron-on interfacing that measures 12.5 by 15 inches.
Iron the interfacing onto the piece of fabric that will be the outside piece of your knitting needle roll. Set this aside.
Take the 12.5 by 7.5 piece of fabric and fold down one long side by 1/4 inch, then 1/4 inch again and press in place. Stitch a straight seam along this fold to secure it.
Lay the smaller piece from Step 3 on top of the larger piece of fabric that will be the lining for your case, lining up the raw bottom edges of both so that the wrong side of the smaller piece faces the right side of the larger piece. Use straight pins to hold the two pieces together along the sides.
Use a ruler or tape measure to measure off 3/4 inch from the left side of the fabric. Use a disappearing fabric pencil to mark a straight line going vertically down the smaller piece of fabric at this point. Measure and mark straight lines going all the way across the smaller piece, distanced 1/2 inch apart. Stop 3/4 inch from the opposite side.
Put the fabric pieces from Step 5 into the sewing machine. Sew a straight seam along each line you drew, going through both layers of the fabric each time. Backstitch at the start and stop of each seam, letting the top portion of the line go slightly over the hemmed edge of the smaller piece of fabric to stabilize it.
Remove the lining and pocket fabric from the sewing machine and lay it out on your table right side up. Take the pins out of the fabric. Place the outer fabric on top of this with the right side down to make a sort of fabric sandwich. Pin the fabric in place around all four sides.
Cut a length of grosgrain or satin ribbon that is 24 inches long. Fold the ribbon in half and sandwich the fold between the layers of fabric on one long side, centered along that side. Position the ribbon so that the loose ends are inside the fabric sandwich and the fold just comes slightly outside the cut edges of the fabric. Add a pin at this point to secure the ribbon.
Sew a straight seam all around the four sides of the needle roll, leaving approximately 5 inches of one side not sewn. Position your seam 1/4 inch in from the cut edges of the fabric as you go.
Remove the pins from the fabric and turn the knitting needle roll right side out through the hole you left in one side. Fold under the edges of this hole and pin it closed, then top stitch a straight seam all around the perimeter of the knitting needle holder, closing this hole in the process. Remove the pins.
Slide your straight needles into the pockets you made in the lining, then roll up the end that does not contain the ribbon. Tie the ribbon in a bow around the rolled package to secure the needle roll.
