How to Make a Fabric Garter

Most garters are made from satin ribbon because satin is sturdy, and the smooth fabric allows the garter to slip on easily. You do not have to limit yourself to solid colored satin, however. A garter can be made from any light or medium-weight fabric. You can make you wedding garter in the same fabric as your bridesmaids' dresses; if one of them catches the bouquet and wears the garter, it will match her gown.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a strip of fabric 2 1/2 inches wide and 30 inches long.

    • 2

Lay the fabric right side up on a table with a long edge closest to you. Fold the strip in half by bringing the bottom edge up to the top edge.

    • 3

Sew the long edges of the strip together by stitching a straight seam 1/2 inch from the edge. Turn the resulting fabric tube right side out.

    • 4

Cut a 16-inch piece of 1/2-inch elastic and use a large safety pin to thread it through the tube. Push the fabric to the middle of the elastic.

    • 5

Overlap the ends of the elastic 1/2 inch to form a ring. Be sure the elastic is not twisted. Sew the ends of the elastic together where they overlap.

    • 6

Distribute the fabric evenly around the ring, making sure it is not twisted.

    • 7

Tuck in 1/2 inch on each end of the fabric tube around the elastic. Hand-sew the folded ends of the tube together.
