How to Make Breakaway Pants

When performing in a theatrical production, sometimes it is necessary to make an extremely quick costume change -- or an extremely dramatic one. One way of accomplishing this is to dress in layers, with the pants on the outside having the ability to be removed quickly -- or breakaway. Breakaway pants are relatively easy and inexpensive to make.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 pair pants - one to two sizes larger than person
  • Scissors
  • Velcro
  • Tape measure
  • Pins
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread

Instructions

  1. Creating the Pants

    • 1

Cut open the entire outside seam of both legs.

    • 2

Lay the Velcro along the entire cut seam and measure to length.

    • 3

Cut the Velcro to the length of the seam.

    • 4

Unfasten the hook side from the loop side of the Velcro.

    • 5

Pin the hook side along one section of the cut seam on the outside of the pants leg.

    • 6

Pin the loop side along the other cut side of the seam of the same leg on the inside -- or wrong side -- of the fabric.

    • 7

Sew both sections of the Velcro onto the pant leg.

    • 8

Repeat the pinning and sewing process on the other pant leg.

    • 9

Fasten the Velcro back together and try the pants on.
