How to Sew Plus Size Clothes From Unused Clothing

You can piece together these fabrics to create custom tailored outfits that fit your exact proportions. Instructions

    • 1

Look through your closet for clothing items you do not see yourself wearing. Have your friends also look through their closets and ask them to donate any unused articles of clothing. Sift through the clothes and find fabrics of similar colors and patterns that can be used together to make clothing.

    • 2

Determine what item you specifically want to make. Use a measuring tape to take your body measurements. Measure your height, bust, waist and hips, and take your measurements to your local fabric store. Ask for a plus sized sewing pattern of the item you want to make that fits your measurements. If the fabric does not carry it, shop online for your pattern.

    • 3

Check the back of your pattern for the amount of fabric required to make your clothes. Cut the unused fabric at the seams to get the most amounts of large, usable pieces of fabric out them. Lie the pieces of fabric on a flat work surface. Lie the pattern pieces on top of the fabric and pin them onto it. Trace an outline of the pattern with sewing chalk onto the fabric.

    • 4

Cut the fabric per the outline and specifications of your pattern. Sew the pieces of your pattern together per the instructions on the back of your pattern. Put your new article of clothing on and use your pins to help tailor your item. Use the pins to mark where and by how much your item needs to be taken in, if needed.

Finish off your new design by cleaning up the hemlines. Fold the fabric up and in toward the wrong side of your item and pin it in place. Sew the hemline along where you just placed your pins.
