Instructions
Measure the mattress width, length and depth. Trim the plastic sheet (a shower curtain liner, vinyl tablecloth or plastic tarp could work) so that it is the width of the mattress plus twice the depth and the length of the mattress plus twice the depth. For example, if the mattress is 9 inches deep, the sheet should be both wider and longer than the mattress by 18 inches.
Subtract three inches from the mattress depth. You will cut out the corners of the sheet using this measurement. For example, if the mattress depth is 9 inches, measure 6 inches from both sides of one corner and cut out the entire corner in a 6-inch square. Repeat for all four corners. When finished, you will have a rectangle with four squares cut out of the corners.
Bring the cut corners of one of the squares together, forming a pocket in the sheet. Sew this seam closed. Take one of the pieces of elastic and center it on the new seam, 1/4 inch from the bottom. Sew into place, stretching elastic as you stitch.
Repeat for the other three corners.
