How To Draft a Clothes Pattern

There are certainly several reasons for making your own clothing. However, if you don't have advanced experience with sewing it can be frustrating and seem impossible, especially when trying to decipher complicated commercial sewing patterns. Making your own patterns at home can leave you with easier work and clothing that is fitted specifically to your body.

Instructions

  1. Drafting a Pattern

    • 1

Measurements should begin with shoulder to wrist, shoulder to waist, waist to knees and then to the ankles. Also measure the inseam (ankle to groin). Record these measurements.

    • 2

Measure from shoulder to shoulder, around the broadest part of the chest, around the hips and around the waist. Record these numbers as well. The measurements in steps 1 and 2 will give you baseline measurements for any pattern, whether it be for a shirt or a pair of pants.

    • 3

Draw the pieces of your garment, according to your measurements, on the paper you are using for drafting. For a sleeve, your beginning measurement will be that of the circumference of the shoulder. After that, you will decide the length you would like for your sleeve and the fit. For instance, you may want a short sleeve only 3 inches in length that fits snugly. You will need to take the additional measurement of the circumference of the arm where the sleeve will end.

    • 4

Mark each piece of your garment. A simple pencil skirt will need a piece for the front, a piece for the back and a waistband. A garment like a pencil skirt will also benefit from a lining, which can be cut using the same pattern but with a different fabric. Other pieces of clothing, such as pea coats or wrap dresses, will have several different pieces.

    • 5

Trace the pattern onto the fabric of your choice and cut it out. Piece together your new outfit.
