How to Make a Dog Kerchief

Dogs look adorable in a kerchief. Even a male dog can wear a bandana print kerchief. In the summer they are cool enough to wear with a dog's fur coat. They will also help you quickly pick your own dog out of a group of dogs of the same breed. A kerchief with a hook-and-loop closure is a safe alternative to knotting a kerchief around a dog's neck.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the distance around your dog's collar when it is buckled or measure loosely around your dog's neck. You should be able to stick a finger between the tape measure and the dog's neck.

    • 2

Calculate the size of the square you will need by adding 2 1/2 inches to the neck measurement and dividing by 1.4. This will give you the length of the sides of the finished square. Add 1 inch to this length for hems and cut a square of fabric with sides this length.

    • 3

Lay the square right side down on an ironing board. Fold up 1/4 inch on all four sides of the square and iron these folds. Make another 1/4-inch fold on all sides and iron them down.

    • 4

Sew the hem on all four sides by stitching between the folds.

    • 5

Fold the hemmed square in half diagonally and lay it on the table with the folded side furthest from you.

    • 6

Cut a 1/2 inch piece of hook-and-loop tape. Pin the hook side next to the fold 1 inch in from the top right corner. Turn the triangle over and lay it on the table with the fold on top. Pin the loop side of the tape next to the fold 1 inch in from the new right corner.

    • 7

Sew the tape to the square by stitching around all the edges of the tape. Sew through both layers of fabric.
