Instructions

    • 1

Drape a measuring tape over your shoulder, matching it up to the top edges of the dress in the front and back, to measure the length needed between the top of the front side of the gown to the top of the back side of the gown. Add two inches to this measurement for seam allowance.

    • 2

Cut out a piece of fabric (matching the fabric of the dress) that is two inches wide and as long as the measurement from Step 1.

    • 3

Lay the piece of fabric flat on a table, right side up, and lay a shoelace on top of it, lining up one of the ends of the shoelaces with one of the shorter edges of the fabric piece.

    • 4

Fold the fabric in half over the shoelace, bringing the longer edges of the fabric together.

    • 5

Sew the short end of the fabric closed, on top of where the shoelace end was matched to the edge of the fabric. This will attach the shoelace to the fabric on one end.

    • 6

Sew the long edges of the fabric together, opposite the fold. Avoid sewing on top of the shoelace this time.

    • 7

Hold the strap steady in between your fingers and pull on the shoelace end that is emerging from the open end of the strap until the strap has been turned right side out.

    • 8

Cut the shoelace off the strap.

    • 9

Iron the strap flat, using the recommended heat setting for the fabric.

    • 10

Sew one of the short edges of the strap to the inside edge of the top of the front side of the dress, about three inches in from the left side of the dress.

    • 11

Sew the other short end of the strap to the inside of the top edge of the back side of the dress, about three inches in from the left side.

    • 12

Repeat Steps 2 through 9 to make a second strap.

    • 13

Attach the second strap to the right side of the dress in the same way that you attached the first strap to the left side.
