How to Make Renaissance Gloves

Gloves during the Renaissance time period were primarily used during two occasions -- royal or official ceremonies, and while engaging in outdoor sports like falconry. During that particular era, gloves were generally a sign of a person who was well off, but for people who enjoy dressing in Renaissance garb today, gloves can be the final accessory for an outfit. Even if you don't have an entire Renaissance era-inspired outfit, you can wear these stylish gloves in everyday situations.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the fabric. Gloves in the Renaissance time period were typically made of leather, though silk and wool (felt) were also used on occasion. If you choose leather, you will need to work with the fabric prior to cutting and sewing together. Stretching it out ensures a snug but not too tight fit. With other fabric, wash it before you sew together, especially if you plan to wash your gloves after creating them.

    • 2

Cut the fabric according to the pattern, which you can find at a fabric store, or you can create your own by tracing your hand onto a piece of paper. Make a mirror image of the tracing, and then tape to the original tracing so that the drawings line up. Draw an oval in the middle of the pattern for your thumb. Do this for both hands.

    • 3

Add any embellishments. Gloves during the Renaissance period featured embellishments around the opening with lace, embroidery or fringe. For extra reinforcement, you should sew on any extra embellishments, particularly if you plan to wear these gloves on a regular basis.

    • 4

Sew the two pieces of fabric together to create your glove. It is a personal preference rather you prefer to sew by hand or with a sewing machine. While it may be more time consuming to sew by hand, you may find you have better control over the fabric if you do so. If you are using leather, be careful during this step as punctured leather can't be repaired. Furthermore, fabric like leather or velvet may require a stronger needle and thread than other fabrics like cotton or felt.
