How to Hem a Woman's Sewn Coat

There are many scenarios where you may wish for a shorter coat. Whether you have recently moved to a warmer climate or received a large coat as a gift from a store that isn't in your area, you can take up the hemline to get a better fit. You can also reduce the hem to alter the way the folds of the coat drape down your body. Petite women often encounter difficulty in finding jackets that fit. If you have experienced this problem, save money by learning how to adjust the hem in your jackets at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the tip of a seam ripper between the outer fabric and lining at the beginning of the hemline. Push the seam ripper along the hemline to break the stitching apart.

    • 2

Measure the hem and determine how far you would like to move it up. Measure 3 inches down from the point where you want to put the hem, and begin cutting away excess outer fabric from this point.

    • 3

Fold the hem up 3 inches, and press a crease line with the iron. Unfold the fabric and stitch bias hem tape along the outer edge of the fabric.

    • 4

Fold the fabric back up on the crease you made, and pin it in place.

    • 5

Cut away excess lining fabric, and hand sew your new hemline.
