How to Attach a Yo-Yo Flower to a Shirt

Do you have a drawer full of plain T-shirts? Embellish them with yo-yos to transform them into fancier, fashionable tops. Yo-yos are made by hand-sewing a running stitch around the perimeter of a fabric circle. When the thread is pulled, the fabric gathers and resembles a flower. You can stack yo-yos of different sizes or add decorative buttons or ribbons for extra flair. Add yo-yo flowers to any shirt in need of a feminine touch.

Things You'll Need

  • 36-inches of thread

Instructions

    • 1

Place the thread through the eye of the needle. Pull the thread until the needle is in the middle of the 36-inch strand. Knot the two ends of thread together to create an 18-inch-long double strand of thread.

    • 2

Place the yo-yo flower on the shirt in the desired location. Secure the yo-yo flower to the shirt with a straight pin.

    • 3

Place one hand through the neck opening of the shirt to separate the front of the shirt from lying flat against the back of the shirt. Pick up the threaded needle with your other hand and insert that hand through the bottom opening of the shirt.

    • 4

Place the needle pointing up toward the perimeter of the yo-yo flower. Push the needle through the shirt and up through the side edge of the yo-yo flower. Pull the needle all the way through until the knot rests against the back of the shirt fabric.

    • 5

Place the tip of the needle 1-centimeter over from the previous thread point and push the needle back down through the yo-yo flower and the shirt to create a small stitch. The needle should now be between the front and back of the shirt again.

    • 6

Move the tip of the needle over 1/2-inch and push it back up through the shirt and edge of the yo-yo flower at a point 1/2-inch away from the previous stitch. Pull the needle all the way through and push it back down through the yo-yo flower and shirt to create another 1-centimeter stitch.

    • 7

Continue placing stitches every 1/2-inch around the edge of the yo-yo flower to join it to the shirt.

    • 8

Knot the thread by creating an additional stitch and passing the tip of the needle through the loop of thread before pulling the stitch tight. Repeat twice and cut the thread.

    • 9

      Remove the straight pin.
