How to Sew Baffles for Down Bedding Garments

Down bedding is warm but the down material has a tendency to shift and move within the fabric. Creating baffles in the bedding will prevent the down feathers from sliding around. Baffles are basically seams that are sewn into the bed garment that traps the down into square sections. These squares are usually 12 inches square and add a clean, geometric look to the bedding. Adding baffles to your bedding garments is a task easily accomplished in an afternoon.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the bedding up and shake it to evenly distribute the down material inside of it. You may want to stand on a porch or a stairwell if it is a large blanket.

    • 2

Lay the bedding down on a hard surface like a hardwood or vinyl floor. Smooth the down with your hands.

    • 3

Measure 12 inches down from the top of the bedding. Mark a line all the way across with the fabric marker. Measure 12 inches down from the line and mark a line across. Repeat until you have reached the bottom of the bedding.

    • 4

Measure 12 inches from the left side of the bedding. Mark a line with the marker from the top of the bedding to the bottom that is 12 inches from the side of the bedding. Measure 12 inches from the first line and mark with a line. Work your way across the comforter until you reach the right side.

    • 5

Load your sewing machine with a strong thread in a matching color. Use a thin needle so the holes don't show in the bedding fabric.

    • 6

Starting with the first vertical line you marked, stitch with a straight stitch from the top of the bedding to the bottom. It may be thick so go as slow as you can so you do not break the needle. Back stitch at the beginning and end of all of the rows of stitching.

    • 7

Sew all of the vertical lines.

    • 8

Sew the horizontal lines starting at the top of the bedding. Work your way to the bottom lines. Back stitch at the beginning and end of all of the rows of stitching.

    • 9

Use your scissors to clip leftover threads.
