Things You'll Need
Instructions
Measure the length of the buttonholes on the suspenders. Subtract 1/4 inch from this measurement to determine the size of the buttons you need.
Sew one button on each side of the center back of the waistband, 3/4 inch from the center back seam and 1 inch below the top of the waistband.
Cut a 24-inch length of thread. Thread a needle and knot the ends of the thread together.
Sew each button on by placing a wooden match on the inside of the waistband at the desired location of the button; place the button on top of the match. Take a small stitch through the lining of the waistband and bring the thread through one of the buttonholes. Go down through an adjacent buttonhole on the other side of the match. Sew through the lining under the button and come up and through the hole you started with. Sew through these two holes two more times in the same way, going through the lining fabric and around the match stick each time. Pull the thread tight with each stitch. Do not stitch through the layer of fabric on the outside of the pants so your stitches will not show.
Sew through the other two holes on the button in the same way. Finish with the thread between the button and the fabric. Remove the match and pull the button up so that the threads between the button and the fabric are straight. Wrap the thread you were sewing with around the threads between the button and the fabric several times to make a shank for the button. Make a small stitch in the fabric and knot the thread to secure it.
Measure the distance between the fly and the side seam and divide by three. Sew the next button this distance from the fly. Sew the second button on this side 1 1/2 inch closer to the fly.
Sew two buttons on the other side of the front of the pants in the same way.
