DIY Hats

Sew up a quick hat for a costume. Costumes look more complete if they have some type of hat or headpiece. You can make a beret to wear with a smock or a tam-o'-shanter to wear with a kilt. These hats are quick to make when you use fabric with a slight stretch, such as fleece or double knit.

  • Paper
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Craft scissors
  • Fleece or double knit fabric
  • Fabric scissors

Instructions

  1. Tam-o'-shanter or French-style Beret

    • 1

Draw a 13-inch circle on paper. This is the pattern for the top of the hat. Cut it out.

    • 2

Trace the circle on another sheet of paper and draw a line 3 inches from the inside edge of the circle. Cut out the both circles to make the pattern for the bottom of the hat.

    • 3

Use the patterns to cut a hat top and hat bottom from fleece or double knit fabric.

    • 4

Place the top of the hat right side up on a table and place the bottom of the hat on top of it with the right side down and all the edges aligned.

    • 5

Sew the top of the hat to the bottom by stitching 1/2 inch from the edge.

    • 6

Clip the curves by cutting the seam allowance, the fabric that extends beyond the seam every 3/8 inch. Cut perpendicular to the seam and close to the seam without cutting the stitching.

    • 7

Turn the hat right side out. If desired, sew a pompon to the middle of the top of the hat to make a tam-o'-shanter.

    Oval Beret

    • 8

Draw an 11-inch-wide, 14-inch-long oval on a sheet of paper. This is the pattern for the top of the hat.

    • 9

Trace the oval onto a second sheet of paper. Draw a line 3 inches from the inside edge of the circle. Cut out both ovals to make the pattern for the bottom of the hat.

    • 10

Assemble the hat in the same way as the circular beret.
