How to Decorate a Dinner Tablecloth

Decorate a plain tablecloth to match your color scheme. If the selection of tablecloth colors at the store is limited, add trim at the hem to create one that will perfectly fit your room and the occasion. Fabric stores carry dozens of different trims in a variety of colors and styles. You can even buy ribbon with a holiday theme. Add ribbon printed with eggs to your Easter tablecloth, or sew loopy trim with jingle balls to a holiday cloth.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure around the hem of the tablecloth. Add 1 inch to this measurement.

    • 2

Cut a piece of trim to this length. If you are unsure of your measurement, cut the trim several inches longer, and cut off the excess after you finish pinning on the trim.

    • 3

Pin the trim around the edge of the tablecloth. When you reach the end, fold under 1 inch of the trim to create a finished end. Cut off any excess trim.

    • 4

Sew the trim to the tablecloth with a straight machine stitch. Sew near the top and bottom edges of flat trim or ribbon. Sew down the middle of rickrack. Sew fringe along the flat band at the top of the fringe. If the band is more than 1/2-inch wide, sew along the top and the bottom of the band.
