How to Make a Serger Cover

Protect your serger from dust when it's not in use by draping a pretty cover over it. A homemade serger cover is a much more appealing option than the thin, plastic cover that may have come with your machine. You can use two different fabrics on the outside and lining of the cover to make it reversible. Plus, since the cover is made of cotton, you can toss it in the laundry for easy cleaning.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • 2 yards fabric
  • Mid-weight fusible interfacing
  • Scissors
  • Iron and ironing board
  • Straight pins
  • Matching thread
  • Sewing machine

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width, depth and height of your serger. Record the three measurements. When measuring the height, measure it with the thread tree lowered.

    • 2

Cut four rectangles of fabric and two rectangles of interfacing that measure the width plus 2 inches by the height plus 2 inches. If you are using contrasting exterior and lining fabric, cut two exterior and two lining rectangles. Label these pieces "A."

    • 3

Cut two rectangles of fabric and one rectangle of interfacing that measure the width plus 1 inch by the depth plus 1 inch. Label these pieces "B."

    • 4

Cut four rectangles of fabric and two of interfacing that measure the depth plus 2 inches by the height plus 2 inches. Label these pieces "C."

    • 5

Iron the interfacing pieces to the corresponding exterior fabric pieces with a warm iron. Arrange the interfacing on the fabric so that the sticky side faces the wrong side of the fabric.

    • 6

Place exterior fabric "B" on top of one piece of exterior fabric "A," right sides together, lining up the width sides. Pin together, then sew with a 1/2-inch seam.

    • 7

Lay the other exterior fabric "A" on top of exterior fabric "B," right sides together. Pin along the width side, then sew with a 1/2-inch seam.

    • 8

Lay one piece of exterior fabric "C" on top of exterior fabric "B," right sides together, lining up the depth sides. Pin together and sew with a 1/2-inch seam. Repeat with the other piece of exterior fabric "C."

    • 9

Pin exterior fabrics "A" and "C" together along the height sides, right sides facing in, the sew with a 1/2-inch seam. When all the pieces are sewn together, you will have a bottomless cube.

    • 10

Sew lining fabrics "A," "B" and "C" together in the same manner.

    • 11

Turn the exterior fabric cube right side out. Turn the lining fabric cube so that the right side is facing in. Slide the lining fabric inside the exterior fabric.

    • 12

Tuck the raw, bottom edges of the lining and exterior fabric cubes under 1 inch to conceal. Pin in place, then sew along the edge to hem.

    • 13

Slide your new cover over the top of your serger.
