How to Sew a Neck Cuff

A scarf with long trailing ends can be a hassle to tuck inside your coat, and if a trailing end catches on tree branch or play equipment, it can become a safety hazard. A stretchy neck cuff made of lightweight fleece is warm without being bulky and does not have any hazardous loose ends. This project has only one seam, so it is an excellent first project for a beginning seamstress.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/2-yard fleece fabric
  • Yardstick
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 1-foot-by-2-foot rectangle of fleece fabric. Fleece stretches more in one direction than the other. The 2-foot-long edges should stretch more than the 1-foot edges.

    • 2

Fold the fabric in half by bringing the 1-foot ends together. The right side of the fleece should be on the inside.

    • 3

Sew along the 1-foot edges, 1/2-inch from the edge with a straight stitch and a standard stitch length. This will make a tube of fabric.

    • 4

Zigzag stitch the seam allowance to strengthen the seam.

    • 5

Turn the cuff right-side-out. Pull it over your head to wear it.
