How to Reverse the Seam for a Brim

When you turn up the brim of a fabric hat you are exposing the reverse side of the fabric. This can be an attractive effect if both sides of the fabric compliment each other. It is not noticeable if the fabric is the same on both sides, unless the seam allowance is showing on the outside of the brim. Reverse the seam on the brim portion of the hat to avoid this problem.

Instructions

  1. Reverse the Seam

    • 1

Prepare the hat to sew the seam. This usually means folding the fabric for the hat in half from top to bottom with the right side of the fabric on the inside.

    • 2

Double the desired width of the brim on the hat, if you will be folding the brim up twice. Use just the measurement of the brim if you will only be turning the brim up once.

    • 3

Measure this distance from the bottom of the hat along the edges of fabric where the seam will be. Make a quarter-inch clip in seam allowance at this point.

    • 4

Turn the fabric around and sew from the top of the hat to the clip in the seam. After you reach the clip, sew backward three stitches to secure the end of the seam. Use type of stitch and the seam allowance recommended in the pattern. If no instructions are given, use a straight stitch and a five-eighths-inch seam allowance.

    • 5

Cut the clip again so that it almost reaches the seam.

    • 6

Turn the hat right side out and pull the unsewn edges of the seam out. Align these edges evenly.

    • 7

Sew the rest of the seam from the bottom edge of the hat to the clip in the seam allowance. Sew backward at the end of the seam to secure it.
