How to Make a Cap Out of Fabric

A fleece cap is a great first sewing project for children. Only one seams is required and the child gets to make something they can actually wear. Cut a smaller rectangle of fleece and let your child sew a matching cap for her doll. Fabric stores carry fleece in dozens of patterns and colors so let your child will enjoy a trip to the store to select her own fabric for this project.

  • Yardstick

Instructions

      Measure around the wearer's head. Add 2 inches to this measurement.

      Cut a rectangle of fleece this wide and 16 inches long.

      Lay the fabric on a table with the right side up. Fold the fabric in half with by bringing the 16-inch sides together.

      Measure 11 inches along the 16-inch open side and mark this point with a pin.

      Sew the 16-inch edges together with a 1/2-inch seam allowance stopping at the pin. This seam will be 11 inches long. Snip the seam allowance at the pin, being careful not to cut the seam. Remove the pin and turn the cap right side out.

      Sew the rest of the seam with a 1/2-inch seam allowance. This makes it so the seam will be on the inside when you turn up the brim.

      Turn up a 2 1/2-inch fold on the bottom of the hat. This is the edge with the seam on the outside at this point. Fold the brim up a second time.

      Cut a piece of cord 12 inches long. Gather together the top 3 inches of the hat and tie it with the strip of fleece.
