How to Make a Fabric Spaghetti Strap

Perfectly matched spaghetti straps are usually made from thin strings of the same fabric that is used for the rest of the garment. You can also use strings of fabric for sashes, belts or ties at the neck or wrists. A fabric string is a tiny tube of fabric turned so that the seam is on the inside. You can finish the ends by sewing them into a seam or by knotting them.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a strip of fabric 1 1/2 inches wide by 1/2 an inch longer than the desired finished strap.

    • 2

Cut a piece of string 3 inches longer than the strip.

    • 3

Lay the fabric out flat on the ironing board with the right side facing up.

    • 4

Fold the fabric in half lengthwise and lightly iron the fold into the fabric, do not make a hard crease.

    • 5

Open the fold and lay the string in the crease with one of the ends even with the short end of the strip.

    • 6

Sew the string to the fabric with a straight stitch at a single spot 1/4 of an inch from the end where the edges are even.

    • 7

Refold the fabric at the soft fold and sew a straight seam with a 1/2-inch seam allowance along the long edge. Do not catch the string inside the fabric in this seam.

    • 8

Trim the seam allowance to 1/8 inch.

    • 9

Pull the string to turn the fabric strip right side out.

    • 10

Cut off the string by cutting the strip 1/4 of an inch inside the point where it is sewn to the fabric.
