Instructions

    • 1

Place a pin in the center of your shirt 1/2 inch below the point where you want the lowest point of the neckline to be. Use a fabric marker and ruler to draw a line from the points where the collar seam crosses the shoulder seam to the pin. This will form the 'V' of the neck.

    • 2

Cut along the lines on the front of the shirt and along the collar seam on the back of the shirt to remove the collar and cut out the v-neckline.

    • 3

Fold the rib knit trim in half length-wise with the right-side out. Starting at the base of the "V," pin the trim along the cut you made with the raw edges even. The folded edge will point away from the neck of the shirt. The trim will overlap in a square at the base of the 'V". Cut off any excess trim.

    • 4

Machine sew the trim around the neck with a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Use a straight stretch stitch if your machine is equipped with one. Otherwise, use a straight stitch and slightly stretch the fabric and trim as you sew. This will allow the neckline to stretch so you can put the shirt on. This is important if you are not lowering the neckline very much.

    • 5

Turn the shirt inside-out and fold the trim up toward the neck of the shirt. Press the seam allowance down toward the body of the shirt.

    • 6

Lay the inside-out shirt flat on a table with the front side on top. Fold the overlapping corners at the "V" out so that they form a triangle that sticks straight up from the shirt. Stitch along the fold that formed the bottom of the triangle when the shirt was laying flat. Fold the sides of the triangle down on each side and stitch them down by stitching 1/8 inch from the center seam.

    • 7

Turn the shirt right-side out and topstitch the collar by sewing outside the collar, 1/8 inch from the first seam. this will hold the seam allowance down and the collar up.
