How to Make a Tam

Most costumes look better with some type of hat or headpiece. Make a quick and easy tam to add the final touch to many types of costumes. It can be a green hat for a resident of the Emerald City, or a plaid tam for a Scottish dancer. You can make a ragged hat for a street urchin, or a quick topper for a Renaissance fair participant. This hat takes less than half a yard of fabric and you can make it in minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Felt or double knit fabric
  • Fabric marker

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the wearer's head around the forehead.

    • 2

Use the tape measure to draw a circle that size in the center of a 15-by-15-inch square of fabric. You can also divide the measurement by 3.14 and use a compass to draw a circle with that diameter on the fabric.

    • 3

Draw another circle 2 inches larger than the first circle.

    • 4

Cut two circles of fabric the size of the large circle you drew. Cut out the smaller circle in the center of one of the circles.

    • 5

Sew the circles together by stacking one on top of the other and sewing around the outside edge, 1/4 inch from the edge.

    • 6

      Turn the tam right-side out.
