How to Turn Toddler Pants Into Bermudas

Toddlers grow so fast. Experienced parents love to remind new parents that their children will be grown before they know it. This rapid growth is easily seen in the quickly growing gap between your child's shoes and the hem of his pants. After you shop for new pants, you can get some use out of the outgrown ones by transforming them into Bermuda shorts. Toddlers look adorable in Bermuda shorts and sandals.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the child from waist to 1 inch below the bottom of his knee.

    • 2

Add 1 inch to this measurement and mark this distance along the side seam of the pants with a pin.

    • 3

Measure the distance from the pin to the hem of the pants and cut this amount off the bottom of both legs of the pants.

    • 4

Zigzag stitch the raw edge at the bottom of the pants legs with a 1/4-inch wide stitch.

    • 5

Iron a 1-inch hem on both pants legs.

    • 6

Stitch the hem in place using a hand sewn hem stitch. Begin the hem stitch by taking a stitch through the seam allowance of the inseam, then a stitch through the turned-up hem. Move 1/4 inch along the hem and take a stitch through the fabric directly behind the hem, picking up only one or two threads. Move 1/4 inch along the hem and take a stitch through the hem. Continue in this way all the way around the hem alternately stitching through the hem and the fabric.

    • 7

Hem the other leg in the same way.
