Instructions for Serging an Eyeglass Case

Contemporary eyeglass styles can be very narrow, while stylish sunglasses are often very wide. A standard-sized eyeglass case can be a poor fit for either style. With a serger and a quilted placemat, you can make a custom fit eyeglass case in less than five minutes. These cases make great gifts and are a great canvas for a monogram or another embroidered design. One placemat will provide enough fabric for two eyeglass cases.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the total width of your closed eyeglasses from temple to temple.

    • 2

Loop the tape measure around the thickest part of your closed glasses to measure the diameter at that point.

    • 3

Add 1 inch to both of these measurements and cut a piece of paper to these measurements to make a pattern for the case.

    • 4

Place the pattern on the place mat with the side that corresponds to the distance around the folded glasses along a finished edge. Cut the fabric along the edges of the pattern.

    • 5

Fold the fabric in half by bringing two of the raw edges together. This will form a case with the finished edge at the top. The right side of the fabric should be on the inside.

    • 6

Serge around the raw edges at the bottom and side of the case with a 3/8-inch wide overcast stitch. Sew at the edge of the fabric so that you are not cutting of any of the selvage as you sew.

    • 7

Turn the eyeglass case right side out.
