How to Make a Tutu Prom Dress

A tutu prom dress is a type of dress inspired by ballet. Surprise your teen with a new, handmade dress to wear to the prom and she'll feel like a ballerina and a princess at the same time. The dress is comprised of a corset bodice in the color of your choice to give a nice shape to the body and improve the look of the bouffant tutu skirt, made of layers of delicate-looking tulle fabric.

Things You'll Need

  • Corset or bodice or halter top
  • Tulle fabric or 6-inch-wide tulle ribbon
  • 1/2-inch-wide elastic
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine (or needle and thread)
  • 1-inch-wide ribbon (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the corset on your work surface and measure the circumference of the bottom opening of the bodice.

    • 2

Cut the elastic according to this measurement. This will form the waist of the dress and keep the appropriate measurements for the tutu. Overlap the elastic ends about an inch and sew them together.

    • 3

Cut the tulle in strips. The length of the strips should double the preferred length of the dress skirt. For example, if you're making an ankle length dress, cut the strips so the length of the tulle is double the measurement from the waist to the ankle. Make each strip 6 inches wide.

    • 4

Fold one strip of tulle over the elastic so the middle of the tulle ends up at the elastic. Tie the tulle in a firm knot around the elastic or ribbon. Repeat until the elastic or ribbon is completely covered and the tulle forms a skirt.

    • 5

Attach the skirt to the corset. Sew the skirt to the inside of the corset along the elastic, taking care not to damage the bones of the corset. Alternatively, you can pull the skirt over the corset for the prom and tie a ribbon into a bow over top of the elastic.
