How to Adjust the Clinchers on a Champion Stitcher

Champion stitcher machines have been in use for more than 75 years for commercial binding. They were originally intended for cobblers and farm tack makers who used them to sew through tough leather. In order to function properly, the stitcher's clincher plate must be positioned so that it is exactly in line with the driver, and the clincher points should be flush with the plate. This can be accomplished by aligning each piece both front to back and left to right.

Instructions

  1. Clincher Plate Adjustment-Front to Back

    • 1

Manually operate the main arm of the stitcher until the stitcher head is at the bottom of its rotation. The stitch driver should be touching the top side of the clincher plate.

    • 2

Align the rib of the driver with the center seam of the clinch plate. The center seam is where the front and back of the cinch plate join.

    • 3

Unscrew the two socket head screws. These are located in the side of the head. Loosen the screws without removing them completely; the upper screw will stick out slightly, but the lower screw will appear under flush.

    • 4

Make slight adjustments to the set screw, so that the driver arm is exactly aligned with the clinch plate from front to back.

    • 5

Tighten the two socket head screws to secure the correct position after the driver arm is completely aligned.

Clincher Plate Adjustment- Left to Right

    • 6

Loosen the two clincher plate nuts. This will free the clincher plate for adjustment.

    • 7

Slide the whole clincher plate to the right or the left manually until it is properly aligned with the arm.

    • 8

Tighten the clincher plate nuts to secure the correct location.

    Clincher point adjustment

    • 9

Turn the driver arm manually until it reaches its lowest position. This will push the clincher points up into their highest position.

    • 10

Check the stitcher's compression setting. Ensure that it is correct, or adjusting the clincher points will not be possible.

    • 11

Loosen the set screw to adjust the clincher points. The set screw is located on the top of the clincher slide.

    • 12

Rotate the clincher slide adjustment screw to reposition the points and correct their alignment. Turning the screw counterclockwise will raise the points, and turning the screw clockwise will lower them.

    • 13

Tighten the set screw when the adjustments are complete.
