Types of Wool Pants

Being properly outfitted for your various activities is essential, and the wool pant can be a key player in fall and winter months. There are many factors that go into choosing a wool pant, including use, climate and lifestyle. There are many options available to consumers, springing from three general types of wool pants.
  1. Wool Dress Pants

    • Wool is used to make suit pants and is often found on men and women in the office. However, wool can be itchy. Wool dress pants are often lined to offset this problem. Types of wool like gabardine and tweed are often used to make dress pants.

Wool dress pants also come in various weights: heavy, medium and light. There isn't one perfect weight. It all depends on how the pant will be used and in what type of climate. For example, if the wearer desires a wool pant for the office and wants to use it in fall, winter and spring, it would be best to find a medium to lightweight pant to ensure the most comfort. Most wool dress pants are dry clean only, or hand wash only. Very few can be laundered in the washing machine.

    Wool Outdoor Pants

    • The wool pant is largely used for outdoor winter activities including hunting, fishing, tracking and manual labor. Wool is very durable, warm and quiet. When it comes to weight, those looking for outdoor pants will probably be interested in heavy to medium weights. Most companies don't make outdoor wool pants in a light weight, so almost any pant you choose that was made specifically for the outdoors will be suitable.

Special considerations for outdoor wool pants include the styling of the pant, your preference of a lining inside the pant and the care instructions for your particular pant. As outdoor pants, these will most likely get very dirty, so you may want to consider a pair that has been treated to withstand the washing machine.

    Wool Undergarments

    • Wool is very popular in the form of undergarments in addition to other layers for exercising outside in the colder months. Wool has the ability to be very thin yet still be able to keep you warm. Wool undergarments are usually, but not always, wool blends, which often include lycra, polyester and elastane. A blend helps the fabric to adjust to your movements and body shape, making it a comfortable pant to use while exercising.

When purchasing wool undergarments, you should pay special attention to the care instructions. While most wool blends can be washed in the washing machine, they cannot go in the dryer because they would shrink. However, this is not always the case, and each garment tag should be consulted for proper care.
