How to Make a Valence Window Treatment

A window valance is a quick and stylish way to make your window a focal point in a room and give the entire space an instant face lift. A valance is a narrow strip of fabric that hangs from a curtain rod like a traditional curtain, but only covers the very top of the window. Making this window treatment yourself at home is a cost-effective alternative to purchasing a ready-made valance from a home decor shop.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the window you're working with to determine the size of fabric you will need. Cut a piece of decorative fabric in a rectangle shape, making it about two feet wide and the same length as the window, plus one inch all around for seam allowance.

    • 2

Fold over each side of the fabric about one inch and sew it in place on a sewing machine, making a clean border hem along all four sides.

    • 3

Cut a one-inch slit every five inches along the top of the fabric, to make room for the curtain hoops. Sew a hem around each slit using the embroidering feature on your sewing machine.

    • 4

Place one curtain hoop into each embroidered slit. These hoops can be found in the window treatment section of most home goods stores.

    • 5

Hang the curtain hoops from a curtain rod and attach the rod over your window using an electric hand drill.
