How to Make an Apron for a Child

Children often need aprons. They can be used while cooking, painting, making arts and crafts or playing with play dough. Not only are kids' aprons useful, they are becoming stylish. Children's boutique stores are selling more and more aprons. The fabric is usually bright and fun and the aprons can sport pockets or different embellishments. Making your own kid's apron will save you money and it doesn't take a lot of effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase the fabric from a craft or fabric store. A heavy cotton fabric will work the best. Prewash the fabric before you make any alteration to the fabric. Washing and drying the fabric will preshrink it.

    • 2

Print out or purchase a pattern. There are many websites that offer apron patterns, such as Sew Liberated (see Resources below).

    • 3

Fold the fabric in half with the back of the fabric facing the outside. Cut out your pattern and pin it to the fabric.

    • 4

Cut out the pattern on the fabric.

    • 5

Unpin the pattern and unfold the fabric.

    • 6

Pin the edges of the apron down for a 1/2" seam allowance and sew around the entire apron.

    • 7

Use ribbon for neck and waist ties. Fold over the ends of the ribbons about 1/2" for a seam allowance and sew them down. Sew two ribbons at the corners of the top of the apron for the neck and two at the middle for the waist.
