Directions for Making a Bedskirt

Although not a necessity, bedskirts add a polished look to any bedroom. In addition to this, bedskirts conceal whatever is underneath the bed, allowing it to be used as a storage space while still looking tidy. Bedskirts can be found in stores, but they are often expensive. Fortunately, it's easy to sew a homemade bedskirt. Anybody with basic sewing skills and common sewing supplies can make a homemade bedskirt in practically no time at all.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the box spring part of the mattress. Measure the depth of the bed from the top of the box spring to the floor.

    • 2

Cut out a piece of fabric that is 2 inches wider and 2 inches longer than the box spring. This will form the body of the bedskirt.

    • 3

Cut out 2 rectangular panels of fabric that are each twice as long as the length of the box spring and 2 inches wider than the depth of the bed.

    • 4

Fold over one of the long edges of each fabric panel 1/4 inch, and then fold it over again another 1/4 inch for a double fold. Sew the hem in place.

    • 5

Sew a gathering stitch along the unhemmed long edges of each of the fabric panels. Pull the thread ends of the gathering stitch to gather each fabric piece until each is just as long as the box spring.

    • 6

Pin the gathered edge of each fabric panel to each of the long edges of the body of the bedskirt, wrong sides together. Sew together, making sure the seam is below the gathering stitch so that the gathering stitch will not show.

    • 7

Cut out two panels of fabric that are each as wide as the depth of the bed and twice as long as the width of the box spring.

    • 8

Hem and gather the long edges of these two fabric panels in the same manner as the first two fabric panels.

    • 9

Sew the gathered edges of each of the fabric panels to the remaining raw edges of the body of the bedskirt.

    • 10

Sew together the four skirt panels at each of the corners of the bedskirt.
