How to Make a Scarf Dress

Scarf dresses, also known as handkerchief dresses, have been in style since the 1920s. The funky, zigzagging hemline gives an otherwise ordinary dress or skirt a little pizazz. These types of dresses can be hard to find in stores. However, a homemade scarf dress is within reach for practically everybody. While scarf or handkerchief skirts may look complicated, they are actually easy to create. With basic sewing skills and common sewing supplies, anybody can make a scarf dress in a matter of minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut out two pieces of fabric that are each 5 feet square. Fold over the edges of each of the fabric pieces 1/4 inch and iron the folds in place.

    • 2

Fold over the edges of the fabric 1/4 inch more and sew the folds down to create a hem. Measure your waist size.

    • 3

Cut a circle that meets your waist size out of the middle of each of the fabric squares. Lay the first fabric square on a table with the points facing upper left, upper right, lower left and lower right.

    • 4

Lay the second fabric square on top of the first, lining up the middle circles. The points of the second fabric square should be facing up, down, left and right. The two fabric pieces should now form a star formation.

    • 5

Sew the two fabric squares together around the circles in the middle. Turn a t-shirt inside out and sew the waistband of the skirt to the bottom of the t-shirt.
