Instructions for Sewing Covers for Foam Cushions

While decorating the home, it may seem difficult to merge comfort with aesthetics. For instance, foam cushions are usually are very comfortable. However, it might seem difficult to cover a foam cushion so that it looks good and matches the rest of the decor. Foam cushion covers are rather easy to sew. With common sewing supplies and basic sewing skills, any home decorator can make a relatively inexpensive foam cushion cover.

Instructions

      Measure the length, width and depth of the cushion.

      Cut two pieces of fabric that each match the width and the depth of the cushion. Cut two more pieces of fabric that each match the length and the depth of the cushion. Add 1 inch all around for seam allowance. These pieces will form the sides, or welt, of the cushion.

      Sew the welt pieces together in a ring form, matching up the shorter edges. Alternate between the length pieces and the width pieces.

      Cut two pieces of fabric that match the width and the length of the cushion. Add 1 inch all around for the seam allowance. These will form the top and bottom pieces of the cushion.

      Sew the top of the welt ring of fabric all around the sides of the top piece of the cushion. Sew the bottom of the welt ring of fabric all around the bottom fabric piece, leaving one of the edges open to allow for a zipper.

      Sew the zipper into the open space and turn the cushion cover right side out. Insert the foam cushion into the cover and zip it up.
