How to Replace Snap Fasteners

Snap fasteners are small, round devices made of metal or plastic that are inserted into clothing in place of buttons. Each snap is comprised of two pieces, the base of the snap, called the socket, and the top of the snap, called the stud. Snaps get their name from the audible snapping noise that occurs when they are fastened. Replacing snap fasteners is a fairly simple process if you use a snap tool kit, available at any sewing supply store.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the fabric right-side up on a flat surface so that the snaps are easily accessible.

    • 2

Insert a flathead screwdriver in between the base and the top of the stud. The base is the only metal part on top of the fabric, so simply insert the screwdriver between the metal and the fabric. Lift gently to pop the snap off. Repeat the process to remove the socket of the snap from the opposite side of the fabric.

    • 3

Place the top piece of the stud into the base of the snap tool with the metal post facing upward. Place the flat piece of the stud in the other side of the snap tool with the bottom of it facing upward.

    • 4

Slide the snap tool containing the stud top underneath the fabric and insert the metal post through the hole in the fabric.

    • 5

Place the tool kit base, containing the flat base of the stud on top of the post and position the center hole onto the metal stud post. Tap the top of the took kit base gently with a hammer until the stud and stud base are firmly attached.

    • 6

Locate the corresponding hole on the opposite side of the clothing item or fabric where you want the snap to attach.

    • 7

Place the top socket piece into the base of the snap tool with the metal rings racing upward. Place the bottom of the socket into the other side of the snap tool with the raised ring facing upward.

    • 8

Slide the snap tool containing the socket top underneath the fabric and insert the raised ring through the hole in the fabric. Place the tool kit base containing the base of the socket on top of the raised ring, and position the center hole onto the raised ring. Tap the top of the tool kit base gently with a hammer until the socket and socket base are firmly attached.

Repeat steps to install the remaining studs and sockets for each hole.
